Heartbreak for a Newalla family dealing with the death of a 1-year-old girl. Police say her father accidentally ran over the child earlier Sunday afternoon.
What started out as a typical Sunday family get together turned tragic, when relatives learned of the deadly accident in the driveway of their home near SE 113th St. off Triple-X Road.
Oklahoma City Police got the call around 1:30 p.m., originally as an auto-pedestrian accident. But when police arrived, they said first responders were on the scene at a Newalla home giving CPR to a 1-year-old little girl.
That's when officers put yellow tape around the home and traffic investigators arrived and learned of the terrible accident.
"We started talking to family members to try to see what happened, and as we spoke to family members, it turned out it was accidental auto pedestrian, a family member had run over a child," said OKC Police Sgt. John Blumenthal.
Investigators say they don't know exactly where the little girl was before she was hit. Police tell News 9 they believe the father was driving a truck when the accident happened. Relatives are still coming out here to comfort the family, but the house is still taped off.
Police also say, at this point, they're not investigating the death as anything suspicious or criminal.
