A man is behind bars, accused of assaulting his girlfriend's 1-year-old child.

News 9 was contacted by an emotional father who said the boyfriend of his ex-girlfriend brutally attacked his youngest child. Now police and DHS are investigating.

"I was told that this guy, Brandon Chattam, beat my child," Corey Roach said.

Roach received a call about 12:30 a.m. Friday from his ex-girlfriend. It's a call he says he'll never forget.

"Oh my God, how could someone do this to a baby? Just evil."

Brandon Chattam, 27, is accused of beating Roach's 1-year-old baby girl, repeatedly punching the infant.

"Her entire head is swollen; black eyes, ears are black, whole head swollen with fluid under the skin," said Roach. "It's awfully hard to look at her. I can't stand looking at her. She's disfigured."

Roach says his daughter was home sleeping when the mother left the baby with Chattam at this home to make a quick run to the store. When she returned, the baby was screaming.

"His reply was, he didn't know what happened, that the dog might have done it," Roach said.

But investigators say that wasn't the case. According to them, when the 1-year-old was brought to St. Mary's Emergency Room, she was suffering from numerous visible injuries, and not because of a dog.

Roach also has a 4-year-old little girl, and says what upsets him the most is that he wasn't there.

"I wasn't there to protect her. I always swore to protect my kids and I wasn't there."

Roach says his daughter had to get MRI's and bone scans at St. Mary's Hospital in Enid.

Investigators don't know what motivated Chattam to beat the baby. He's been charged with injury to a minor child as a result of the investigation, and is being held at the Garfield County Detention Facility without bond

News 9 also learned Chattam worked for the Enid School District delivering food to elementary kids.
