Bethany High School was put on lockdown Friday afternoon, after a maintenance worker found what looked like a detonated pipe bomb in a school parking lot.

Students were kept inside for almost two hours, until bomb squad techs from Oklahoma County and the FBI determined the device was not a pipe bomb after all.

The mother of a student at the school called police and told them her son had dropped an old-fashioned potato launcher in the school parking lot. Vehicles had run over the launcher, which made it look like it had detonated.

Bethany Police Chief Phil Cole says his people had to take the threat seriously.

"I hope it's a good learning experience for all the school kids here," he said.

There's no word tonight on whether the school plans any punishment for the student who brought the potato gun.
