Police say officers dressed in plain clothes were called to the area to check on a complaint of drug activity. The officers approached a car when they believed Patterson to be involved in a drug deal.
However, when the undercover officers identified themselves as police, Patterson tried to run them over. One officer, later identified as Sgt. Charles Schamel, was hit by the suspect's car.
Sgt. Schamel fired one shot at Patterson in self-defense, police said. Patterson was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sgt. Schamel is 13-year-veteran with the Oklahoma City police's Hefner division. He has been placed on routine administrative leave pending outcome of the investigation.
