Oklahoma State fell behind early to No. 21 New Mexico Sunday at Isotopes Park and couldn't mount a comeback as the Cowboys suffered their first loss of the season by a 9-1 margin.

The Cowboys (2-1) managed just four hits in the contest, with Tanner Krietemeier's 3-for-4 effort leading the way, while New Mexico collected 14 hits off a trio of OSU pitchers.

"We didn't play well today and credit to New Mexico, they were aggressive early on and really grabbed the momentum in the first inning," said OSU head coach Josh Holliday. "After an emotional game like last night that was a pretty big statement by them, to come up and put five (runs) up. We didn't pitch or defend like a winning team in the first inning, and they took advantage of it. We got in a hole and never really put anything together offensively to put the pressure back on them.

"We'll regroup, get home and get prepared for our home opener on Tuesday. All-in-all it was a good weekend, could have been a great one, but we'll learn from it."

UNM (1-2) got off to a big lead against Phillip Wilson, who made his first-career start for the Cowboys. Wilson lasted just 1/3 of an inning as the Lobos tagged the right-hander for five runs, three of them earned, on four hits to take a 5-0 lead after one.

The Lobos would take a six-run lead in the second before OSU finally got on the scoreboard in the fourth. In that inning, Zach Fish drew a one-out walk and advanced to third on a single by Krietemeier. Fish scored the Cowboys' lone run on an RBI groundout by Victor Romero to make the score 6-1.

In the sixth, Mitch Garver continued his hot hitting as he delivered a two-out, two-RBI triple to push the Lobos' lead to 8-1. The UNM catcher was 4-for-4 in the contest and finished with three RBIs.

OSU opens a 26-game homestand Tuesday with its 2013 home opener at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium against Alcorn State. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
