The No. 2 Oklahoma softball team needed extra innings and a few close plays to improve to 10-0 this season.
A sacrifice fly from Jessica Shults scored Lauren Chamberlain in the top of the seventh to force extra innings, and OU scored four runs in the ninth inning to capture a 7-5 victory over Notre Dame Sunday afternoon.
The Sooners held a 2-0 lead heading to the bottom of the sixth, but the Irish erupted for three runs on four hits, chasing starter Keilani Ricketts from the game.
After Chamberlain scored to tie the game in the seventh, the Sooners couldn't do anything in their half of the eighth inning. Notre Dame put two runners on with one out, but Michelle Gascoigne struck out the next two batters to end the threat. Gascoigne struck out nine batters in 3.2 innings of work.
In the ninth, the Sooners scored four runs on two bases-loaded walks, a single and a sacrifice fly to grab a 7-3 lead. Notre Dame's Amy Buntin blasted a two-run home run to make the score 7-5, but Gascoigne struck out the last two batters to end the game.
The Sooners are back in action on Thursday when they travel to Palm Springs, Calif. to take part in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. OU will face No.13 Georgia, Nebraska, No. 16 Arizona, UC-Santa Barbara and No. 25 Florida State.
