Oklahomans Among Those Battling Through Northeast Blizzard

The Northeast continued its cleanup after a major blizzard this weekend and several Oklahomans were right in the middle of it.

One family has been in the New York City area for months trying to help victims of Hurricane Sandy rebuild their homes that were destroyed when the storm made landfall.

Blizzard conditions worried many people in the already fragile area, especially since some homeowners still don't have utilities fully restored.

"Concerns of power outages. A lot of folks here that had damage from hurricane sandy still don't have heat back on in their homes," explained Aimée Swickey, whose family was volunteering there. "They're using just little space heaters. So you can imagine if there's twelve to eighteen inches of snow, and then the electricity goes out and they don't even have their space heater that's quite a shock."

Swickey said before snow even began falling, folks swamped stores to try and stock up on supplies just in case they saw a repeat of Sandy.

"We got a report, I think it was yesterday afternoon, that the gas stations had run out of gas," Swickey said.

The team she and her husband has been working with surveyed many of the hardest-hit areas on Saturday, and luckily, there was no additional major damage to report on Saturday. But ice could cause problems and power outages in the area over the next couple of days.
