Oklahoma senior forward Renae Cuellar scored her team-high eighth goal of the season, but Texas Tech took advantage of its limited opportunities to defeat the Sooners 2-1 in Lubbock on Friday.
Texas Tech struck first just eight minutes into the game, but Cuellar scored exactly one minute later. Cuellar has scored each of the last four goals for the Sooners dating back to her game-winner against Oklahoma State on Sept. 7.
The Sooners had more shots on goal than the Red Raiders in the first half by a 3-2 count, but Texas Tech took advantage by putting goal opportunities in for scores. TTU's Jessica Fuston headed in what would become the difference-maker, scoring in the 43rd minute of the first half to give the Red Raiders the lead.
OU goalkeeper Kelsey Devonshire finished with eight saves, tying a season high, all of which came in a blistering second half for the Sooner defense. Devonshire and the OU defense shut out Texas Tech in the second half despite 16 shots in the period by the Red Raiders.
Playing in just the fourth game of her career, freshman forward Devin Barrett provided a spark for the Sooners late, attacking the Texas Tech goal with three shots, a new career high. Cuellar added three shots, including two on goal, while Abby Hodgen also had two shots for Oklahoma.
OU continues on the road this weekend with a Bedlam Series contest against No. 17 Oklahoma State at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 30, in Stillwater. The Sooners upset the Cowgirls, ranked No. 3 in the country at the time, earlier this season, 1-0, in Norman. The game on Sunday will be televised live on FS Oklahoma.
