The trial began Monday morning for a Canadian County couple accused of beating, burning and neglecting their three adopted children.

Prosecutors say John and Sonja Kluth abused the two boys and a girl, locked them in an underground shelter and fed them pet food. An investigation into the Kluths began when one of the boys ran away from home in November 2010. A worker at a Braum's store in northwest Oklahoma City discovered the then 16 year old sitting near the trash in the freezing weather. Prosecutors say the boy was obviously malnourished.

The Kluths are each charged with three counts of child abuse and three counts of child neglect. It's not known how long it will take attorneys to choose a jury for the trial.
