The Oklahoma State cheerleading squads added two National Championships to its impressive resume over the weekend winning the large co-ed as well as the small co-ed cheer title at the National Cheerleading Association's College Nationals.
The two teams traveled to Daytona Beach, Florida to compete with the nation's finest on April 11-15 and OSU returned to Oklahoma as champions.
"It's relief and shock and happiness, it's just awesome," said John Stuart a junior from Choctaw, Okla. "There's no other feeling like it. It's like seven emotions happening at once."
The two team's national titles marks the second time in three years that both teams won the national competition in the same year.
OSU Spirit Coordinator and Pom Coach Tracey Wittwer, who also assists with the cheer squads, said it is difficult to describe the emotions of winning both national championships.
"At this time of the year, we truly become one family rather than two separate families," Wittwer said. "The fact that they both competed at the same competition and they both placed first in our two different divisions and we won national titles together…the emotion was just hard to explain."
The large co-ed squad consists of the same number of males and females who are also the cheerleaders that perform at OSU sporting events, while the small co-ed group has a limit of four males and is made up of cheerleaders who solely perform at competitions.
Wittwer praised the cheerleaders for the work and preparation they put into the competition, saying it is the reason both squads were able to leave Florida as national champions.
"I can't imagine us both not winning, just knowing we were both as prepared as we possibly could be," Wittwer said. "Both squads put in all the hard work. I can't imagine it playing out any differently than it did."
