A Putnam City High School teacher accused of having a sexual relationship with a student has been arrested on three counts of statutory rape.
Putnam City Campus Police arrested Lisa Kays on Monday. Accusations against Kays first surfaced February 8, when someone called in a tip to a school hotline.
Kays is accused of having an affair with a 17-year-old boy who was part of the Spanish Club.
The district removed the teacher from her classroom the next day and launched an investigation. Police and administrators interviewed the alleged victim and multiple students.
"The idea of a teacher in an inappropriate relationship with a student is very disturbing and that relationship would be contrary to all values of the teaching profession," Superintendent Paul Hurst said.
During the investigation, police learned only one student was involved, and that there were encounters between Kays and the student inside the school building, after hours.
After the interviews, administrators decided to contact the Oklahoma Department of Human Services (DHS) to report the incident.
"We really appreciate the person who called into the secret witness hotline and also the students who have cooperated with us through this investigation," Chief Mark Stout said.
Kays has been with the Putnam City School District since August 2002. She was booked into the Oklahoma County Jail Monday on three counts of statutory rape and two counts of oral sodomy. She could be formally charged by the end of the week.
Kays is out on $125,000 bond. She has not been formally charged. Her husband filed for divorce last month.
