Oklahoma Task Force To Target Underaged Alcohol Sales

The Oklahoma County Metro Alcohol Enforcement Task Force plans to target stores selling alcohol to minors.

Oklahoma County Sheriff John Whetsel made the announcement Tuesday.

"In 2010, drivers between 16 and 19 years old made up just 6% of all licensed drivers in Oklahoma, but were responsible for 12% of alcohol related crashes throughout the state" said Sheriff Whetsel. "28 people died in crashes involving teens during who were driving under the influence of alcohol, obviously we still have work to do."

The task force will work with trained teenagers who will attempt to buy alcohol at stores and bars. The task force also will conduct "party patrols," by responding to any loud noise or loud music calls. During these "party calls," deputies will check to see if everyone who is drinking alcohol is of legal drinking age.

"Over the next few months we will target underage drinking during spring break, Memorial Day weekend and proms" said Whetsel. "We will have zero tolerance for those found in violation."

The Oklahoma County Metro Alcohol Enforcement Task Force is made up of the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office, Bethany Police, Forest Park Police, and Midwest City Police.
