Dog Rescued In OKC Wildfires Still Needs Forever Home

OKLAHOMA CITY -- He became a bit of a celebrity during those horrible wildfires a little over a month ago. A black dog firefighters found as they were checking on hot spots made its way onto live TV on News 9.

He was a bit singed, and a little skinny. But when Del City Firefighters discovered the black pit bull mix, he certainly seemed grateful.

"This little dog comes running up to us looking pretty thirsty and it drank two bottles of water before we left the scene," one of the firefighters said.

Firefighters turned the dog over to Animal Control.

"Typically, we try to hold the animals that are in any type of emergency whether it's a fire or tornado, or any other type of emergency. We try to hold on to the animals for a minimum of 30 days," said Rodney Pesch, the operations supervisor for Oklahoma City Animal welfare's field services unit.

But the dog's owners never came. So now he's up for adoption.

"He seems friendly, he likes people," said Pesch. "I'm not sure how the dog is around other animals, but clearly he has a friendly temperament."

The dog can perhaps use his celebrity status to find a new home.

"It would be an excellent ending to the story of the fires," Pesch said.

Animal control said they took in fewer than ten dogs after the recent fires, and most of them were claimed by their owners.

This is also a good reminder to put microchips and tags on your animals in case they do go missing.
