MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota – Former Oklahoma running back Adrian Peterson has agreed to a seven-year contract extension with the Minnesota Vikings, the team announced on Saturday.
Peterson's new deal will be worth $100 million, with $36 million guaranteed. That will make him the highest paid running back in NFL history, surpassing the deal signed by Chris Johnson and the Tennessee Titans on Sept. 1.
The 26-year-old Peterson began his NFL career in 2007, when he was the No. 7 overall selection by the Vikings. He immediately took the league by storm, finishing second in the league in rushing and scoring 12 touchdowns on his way to winning Rookie of the Year.
In the three seasons since then, he has never finished worse than sixth in the NFL in rushing. He has totaled 5,782 yards and 52 touchdowns in only four years, and has been named to the Pro Bowl every season he has been in the league.
With his new deal in place, Peterson is now signed through the 2017 season, when he will be 33 years old. That likely will give him the rare opportunity of playing for the same team for his entire NFL career.
