Curious what you fellow serious golfers or golf observers think. On Sunday night’s Blitz, I took 27 seconds to read what we call our Blitz Openit’s supposed to be 15 seconds, so we were behind before getting out of the gate. A no-no in our business.
The reason I bring that up is that the statement made needed as much background as possible, because naming the best golfer in the history of the state is a difficult task, likely one that can’t be completely resolved. This state has been blessed by women, amateurs, Tour players and Seniorser, Champions.
Here was my take:
26 years ago he won the US Amateur...then the Western Open as an amateur.
World, Walker, Presidents, and Ryder Cups...47 years old in a month, he finished fifth and fifth the past two weeks at the Nelson and Colonial.
Hell be a 50-year-old favorite to win the 20-14 US Senior Open on his home course at Oak Tree National.
Not bad for guy fights diabeteswears an insulin pump and has overcome serious injuries.
An OSU Cowboy-for-Lifer...good chance Scott Verplank will go down as the greatest golfer in state history.
Feel free to add to the following list that includes names that could ultimately build a case for the “best ever:”
Nancy Lopez
Charlie Coe
Bob Tway
Gil Morgan
Orville Moody
Bogey Boy,
Dean
