Staff and Wire Reports
OKLAHOMA CITY -- Oklahoma State Election Board officials said voting across the state went smoothly and preliminary reports show turnout appeared to down in some areas.
Topping Tuesday's ballot were the Democratic and Republican races for governor. Attorney General Drew Edmondson faced Lt. Gov. Jari Askins for the Democratic nomination while Congresswoman Mary Fallin ran against state Sen. Randy Brogdon and a pair of Oklahoma City businessmen. Races for the U.S. Senate, U.S. House and the state Legislature were also on the ballot.
For any race that requires it, a runoff election is set for Aug. 24.
Paul Ziriax with the Oklahoma State Election Board said preliminary reports point to a lower turnout in the Tulsa area. However he said voter turnout seemed to be about average in the Oklahoma City area.
"We expected somewhere above the turnout in 2006," Ziriax said.
He said 2002 was the last time there was an gubernatorial primary election, which tends to generate more turnout that other primary elections.
But Oklahoma State Election Board Secretary Doug Sanderson said generating voter interest for primaries is just not an easy thing to do.
"It's not the final vote. At the primaries the parties are electing their nominees for the general election, so some people want to wait till the person is elected, and of course coming in July some people are in the summer mode so people maybe not as focused as they will be this fall," Sanderson said.
Election officials said they expect about 25 percent turnout or about 500,000 people to vote in today's primaries. Sanderson said the general election voter turnout in November will likely be double of today's turnout.
Here is a list of uncontested races in Oklahoma.
