NORMAN, Oklahoma -- Oklahoma defensive ends Jeremy Beal and Auston English were named to the watch list for the Ted Hendricks Award Thursday, joining an ever-growing list of Sooners recognized by preseason award lists.
The Hendricks Award is given annually to the nation's best defensive end, and last year was awarded to Texas' Brian Orakpo.
Beal had a breakout season as a sophomore last year, starting all 14 games and finishing with 61 tackles, 15.5 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks and three forced fumbles.
Beal was selected as a member of the All-Big 12 defensive second team, joining teammates Gerald McCoy and Dominique Franks as the only sophomores on the all-conference defensive teams.
English played in 11 games last season and started nine. After spraining his knee Nov. 1 against Nebraska, he saw a reduction in playing time.
Despite his limited role, English finished with 33 tackles, nine tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks.
Two years ago, English was a member of the All-12 defensive first team after recording 36 tackles, 13 tackles for loss and 9.5 sacks.
Beal and English join Sam Bradford (Davey O'Brien Award), DeMarco Murray, Chris Brown (Doak Walker Award) and Jermaine Gresham (Mackey Award) as Sooners recognized on preseason watch lists.
