Cyclist Hit, Killed by Vehicle

OKLAHOMA CITY -- A man was killed from serious injuries suffered after being hit by a car Saturday night.

Police Lt. Don Holland said 60-year-old James Smith II was riding his bicycle about 9:15 p.m. Saturday when he made a sharp turn in front of the van on N Rockwell Avenue. Holland said Smith hit the windshield and was then run over.

Police said they see these kinds of accidents too often.

"Any kind of reflective gear, especially at night, you got to have reflective gear and you have to have a helmet," Oklahoma City police Lt. Don Holland said.

The driver of the van was not cited.

Paramedics took Smith to OU Medical Center, where doctors pronounced him dead about 10 p.m. Holland said Smith was not wearing a helmet.
