A bitterly cold mid-January air mass dropped temperatures well below zero across northern New England Friday, with lows of 35 below registered in far northern Maine.
It got down to about 15 below overnight farther south. As the temperature refused to budge out of the Arctic range, Portland officials opened shelters early, visited homeless encampments to offer blankets and expanded foot patrols to make sure that people needing shelter were safe.
In northern Maine, residents face the prospect of the temperature staying
below zero until Sunday.
