Before you hand over your car keys to a friend, family member, or a stranger (like a mechanic), know that you may very well be held responsible should they get into an accident.
The Insurance Commission says many policies have exclusions, so that if a mechanic or valet is driving, your insurance would not cover it. Instead, the company's liability insurance would. Now if the company does not have insurance, you could be stuck! That's why it is so important to not only ask your mechanic if they have liability insurance, but to ask to see proof. They should be willing to show you.
Now is also a great time to look at your policy! And pay special attention to exclusions.
If you have any questions about your insurance or an insurance problem, call the OK Insurance Department at 1-800-522-0071.
Now for more on the story we did tonight. I just talked to Helen Horne and she says her insurance company is now going to bat for her. They are going to get with the collision center's insurance company and try to figure this one out. The owner, Todd Freeman says he's always wanted to do the right thing and he's confused as to why she filed it with her insurance in the first place. This will be interesting to see which insurance company it ends up with. I'll keep you posted!
