OKLAHOMA CITY -- It is time to fall back for daylight savings, but area firefighters also say it's time to check your smoke detector.
Fire officials said you should change the batteries twice a year. This small step could save your life. Just having a smoke detector doubles your chance of surviving a fire in your home.
"You know, the city cannot afford to put a fireman on every corner, but if you have a working smoke detector in your house, you're essentially putting a fireman in your house to alert you," Oklahoma City Fire Chief Tommy Iago said.
The fire department recommends installing the new battery according to the directions on your individual unit. They also said you should test your smoke detector monthly.
