A state senator wants public institutions to save energy.
Sen. Andrew Rice is introducing two bills into legislation. The first bill would require schools to cut energy consumption by using more energy efficient light bulbs and appliances.
The second measure requires some state agencies to convert their fleet vehicles to use alternative fuels.
"It's reduced hydrocarbon emissions by 50 percent and carbon monoxide emissions by 90 percent, so it's good for environment and good for economy," Rice said.
Rice said he hasn't calculated the cost of switching to alternative fuel vehicles, although he said it greatly reduces fuel and maintenance costs.
