I had an interesting conversation Monday. I called the CBS affiliate in Indianapolis to ask them if I could have some video and sound from the IU football team. After a long pause, there was laughter. The Indy sports anchor then said, "you realize you said football, right?" I explained that OSU is playing the Hoosiers in the Insight Bowl, and he then explained that its basketball season and nobody there gives a rip about the Indiana football team. For this college basketball fan, I couldn't help but let out a sigh and smile.
One of the more popular arguments against a college football playoff is that it would ruin the regular season. College football would then become as meaningless as college basketball. But try telling that to people in Indiana and Kentucky and North Carolina and the whole East Coast. The idea that nobody cares about college basketball until the college football season is over may be true in the places where football teams are in the hunt for the BCS, but not everywhere.
Certainly Oklahomans and Ohio State-ans and LSU-ans and Missourians and West Virginians are caught up in the great football chase. But not everybody is. Don't sell me on the righteousness of the BCS by telling me college basketball's regular season is dead. That's Not True! College basketball still has the best post-season on planet Earth. And the regular season is still pretty fun too.
My Dad always told me, "don't build yourself up by tearing someone else down." Try another argument BCS lovers. College basketball is just fine.
