Firefighters from Edmond, Guthrie and Oklahoma City fire departments were called in to battle a number of grass fires that flared up along along Interstate 35, between Edmond and Guthrie.
Crews responded to as many as six fires, beginning at E. 33rd on northbound I-35 in Edmond, up to the Guthrie exit. The one near the Guthrie exit, between Camp Dr. and Seward Rd., was the largest of the fires. The fire that started near the Guthrie exit was blowing in the direction of at least one home and a fireworks store in the area. Crews worked quickly though and prevented any of the structures from being damaged.
Two crashes occurred along the highway. The first wreck occurred on northbound I-35 around the Guthrie exit. Both the vehicle and the Guthrie fire vehicle sustained extensive damage. The crash caused a shut down to the outside lane of I-35 northbound. The wrecks caused a huge backup several miles long.
A second wreck then occurred in the inside lanes of northbound I-35 near Seward Rd. No injuries were reported. Wind was blowing smoke from the fire away from the highway, so it is unclear what caused the crashes.
Authorities think the fire was started from a blown tire on a vehicle throwing hot sparks onto the dry grass in the right of way.
