More than $2-million worth of heroin was seized during a traffic stop on Interstate-40, just west of El Reno, last week.

The drugs were found in a 2007 Toyota Camry that was being hauled on the back of a semi on March 31. According to the report, a Canadian County Sheriff’s deputy made the stop when the recognized inconsistencies in the vehicle’s registration.

The deputy initiated the stop and received permission from the truck driver to search the Toyota. A K9 unit was brought in and the dog immediately made a positive hit on the car.

During a search of the vehicle, deputies discovered a hidden compartment had been fashioned into the center console. Inside the compartment, deputies found six bundles wrapped in cellophane, carbon paper, covered in axle grease and placed inside clear, vacuum-sealed bags.

In all the deputies seized approximately 20 pounds of heroin, worth an estimated street value of more than $2-million.

During the investigation, the deputies determined that the truck driver was unaware of the heroin and was not directly involved in the crime. He was later allowed to continue on his way. The truck originated on the west coast and was bound for the east coast.

“Fortunately we work as members of a federal task force and have the ability to continue the investigation into the origination and final destination of the drugs.  It wouldn’t make any sense to just pull the drugs and not attempt to find the responsible parties,” said Randall Edwards, Canadian County Sheriff.

A Canadian County deputy will now work as a task force officer with the US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) to follow up on the crime.
