It has been an Oklahoma City and Bricktown staple for more than 30 years. But a spokesperson for Spaghetti Warehouse announced Monday will be their last day.
The popular restaurant has been serving up customers in the heart of Bricktown before there really even was a Bricktown. The Spaghetti Warehouse opened up back in 1989, four years before voters even passed the first MAPS.
“I’m just devastated it’s closing,” said Jason Black when he learned the news. “This was the original place to go in Bricktown for a long time. I remember in high school it was a big deal. ‘Hey, let’s go to Spaghetti Warehouse.’”
As Bricktown boomed up all around, the Spaghetti Warehouse continued to provide a historic presence.
“It’s going to be sad to see it go because it’s been a staple in Bricktown for a long long time,” said John Allgood, a former president of the Bricktown Association.
The restaurant spokesperson didn't say what was behind the decision and employees were only told today they were losing their jobs.
“They didn’t tell us. They expect loyalty from their staff but none in return,” said Saundra Mericle an employee who learned Monday morning she was losing her job.
“We all have families and responsibilities. We have to go now explain to our families that we lost our jobs. Are we going to be able to pay our rent? Are we going to be able to feed our kids?”
But with the closing effective Tuesday, Monday was looking like the restaurant could be busy with customers trying to get one final meal.
“I had plans to go somewhere else,” he said. “But now I think I'm going to have to change it for the old days and go in there and get some spaghetti.”
The current head of the Bricktown Association says they are sad to see the Spaghetti Warehouse close, but at the same time are excited about what the future of the building will told.
Here is a complete statement from the company about the closing:
“After more than 30 years in the community, we have made the difficult business decision to suspend operations and announce the closure of the Spaghetti Warehouse Restaurant in Oklahoma City.
The closure is effective on Tuesday, February 2nd. We are working closely with everyone on our staff, whose hard work and dedication is appreciated and we thank them for their many contributions.
To our many guests, we say thank you. We enjoyed serving you, your family and friends. And, it was our pleasure to share in the celebrations that took place over countless lunches and dinners, not to mention birthdays, anniversaries and other special occasions.
Spaghetti Warehouse was one of the first businesses involved in the Bricktown revitalization and we thank everyone in the Oklahoma City community who we’ve served and who supported us. For anyone who has a question about our restaurant in Oklahoma City, we invite you to send us an email at: info@meatballs.com
As we continue to work on a new look for our brand, we are hopeful that in the near future we can reopen Spaghetti Warehouse within the Oklahoma City market.”
