Oklahoma City police are investigating a homicide, after a 17-year-old girl was shot and killed at an apartment complex in the early morning hours of New Year's Day.

According to police, at about 1 a.m., officers responded to reports of shots fired at the Penn Plaza Apartments, located near N.W. 39th and Penn. When they arrived, they found the body of 17-year-old Rashya Long in the parking lot.

Officers learned that there was a large party in one of the apartments. A fight broke out among a large group of people and it spilled out onto the parking lot. That’s when someone fired shots.

At this time, police believe Long is the only victim of the shooting.

"Right now, we don’t know if she was involved in the altercation or if she was just an innocent bystander who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time,” said Lt. Jeff Spruill with Oklahoma City police.

Long’s stepfather told News 9’s Rachel Calderon that Long was a student at Centennial High School, and that she had a love for dance and was the basketball team manager.

Police have not made an arrest in this case. They also don't have a suspect description at this time.
