Around 6:15 p.m. Thursday, police responded to a disturbance call outside of a tattoo shop near N.W. 17th and Portland, according to the release. Police said Peques was swinging a knife from the bed of a pickup truck, and personnel from the tattoo shop talked him into handing the knife over to them.

The release states Peques then walked inside a laundromat, and Officer David Jehle followed him. Police said Peques got on top of Officer Jehle and repeatedly punched him in the face and head, which led Jehle to fire his gun at Peques.

Police say Peques is still at OU Medical Center in critical condition, and Officer Jehle has been placed on administrative leave.
