The Southwestern Oklahoma State University baseball game stepped out from conference play for a midweek game against the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma on Tuesday afternoon and came away with a 9-1 victory. SWOSU improves to 10-7 on the year with the win.
Showcasing a modified lineup, the SWOSU offense pounded out 16 hits against seven different USAO pitchers. Kale Thaxton had three hits and one RBI and six other players recorded a multi-hit game while eight of the nine position players recorded a hit.
SWOSU got the scoring started with Tyler Rapp coming across to score on a passed ball in the bottom of the second inning. The Bulldogs upped the lead to 2-0 in the third on an RBI groundout from Zack Mang before breaking the game open in the sixth.
Dietrick Turney, Thaxton, Kevin Cantrell and Chris Faulkner all had RBI hits in the six-run sixth inning which put the Bulldogs well in control of the game with an 8-0 lead. Turney added an RBI single in the seventh to push it to 9-0 before USAO got their lone run in the top of the eighth.
Kevin Hamm started and threw 5.1 innings for SWOSU, picking up his second win of the season after allowing just three hits. Hamm, now 2-1 on the year, was relieved by Earl Jenkins, Erick Cummings and Kevin Kelly, who combined to allow three hits and one run in 3.2 innings of work.
The Bulldogs will host Quincy this weekend for a non-conference series on Saturday and Sunday, starting at noon both days.
