Seven people, including two children, escaped unharmed when fire swept through a duplex Monday morning near N.W. 12th Street and Virginia.

The fire started around 6:30 a.m. in a closet at a home in the 2000 block of N.W. 12th Street. Crews reported black smoke coming from the building when they arrived. Firefighters quickly put out the flames.

The fire heavily damaged one side of the duplex. Fortunately, the two families living on both sides of the home safely escaped.
