When I say I'm an Intern at News 9 I get one of three different responses from almost everyone: 1. Oh, you get coffee for everyone 2. OH MY GOODNESS you know Gary England! 3. You work for News 9 that is so cool! Only one of those three responses is correct… I do know Gary. In fact I learn from him all the time.
I get the making coffee comment a lot, and I will say going into this internship I wouldn't have been surprised at all if that's what I was supposed to do. But not once have I ever been treated like that. This has been an incredible learning experience from day one. As an intern I help the team prepare for the afternoon shows on a regular basis. I help make graphics, do radio forecasts, and get the rundown in order before the shows. I practice in front of the green screen, and I learn to forecast from a team of meteorologists rather than from a textbook. It makes a whole lot more sense that way!
As well as the regular day to day procedures I have been able to go to a few weather talks with the meteorologists and learn how all of that works. You wouldn't believe some of the questions kids ask! I definitely still have some learning to do to make sure I can answer all of them.
I have also been able to help out during severe weather. I have answered the phone and taken viewer's calls, helped Michael keep up with all the storm trackers. I've helped make sure the storm trackers' videos were up and running as well as their audio on the ever so famous getner. I've delivered watches and warning to Gary himself during severe weather coverage as well as monitored chats for any updates to the warnings.
So to sum it all up, I get the opportunity to be a part of one of the best weather teams around and I'm still in college! Sure beats getting coffee huh?
