The NBA Finals will apparently be a big money maker for after hours businesses and we aren't talking about clubs.
Mark Elam with Oklahomans against Trafficking Humans (OATH) is certain the Thunder's quest to be champions is good for OKC, but he fears the party will involve prostitutes.
"It's pretty well known when men travel out of country for work and tourism, there is sexual exploitation," said Elam. "If they are not with their families, then boys can be boys. We don't mind them being boys, as long as they are doing it with other women that are cooperating but not with our young girls."
There's already evidence online. Brian Bates of JohnTV, who exposes working girls on Robinson, believes it will be business as usual.
"The prostitution that you will see on places like back page and places like that where they will use keywords, ‘Thunder or NBA,' those are the same girls that have been out here on Robinson that were $20 a trick and they'll be $200 to $300 a trick, because of the NBA and because they're online, but that certainly doesn't equate to record setting trafficking," Bates said.
Yet, members of OATH have plans to canvas for call girls in Bricktown clubs and even visit hotels with a message.
"Oklahoma has gained the reputation of having young girls being prostituted as women, but they are still teenagers and that's illegal," Elam said.
OATH is asking for volunteers to help spread the word on game nights. There will be a staging area set up at the Salvation Army on S.W. 5th Street Tuesday and Thursday from 6 to 7 p.m. if you'd like to help.
