TISHOMINGO, Oklahoma -- A historic site in the southeastern part of the state went up in flames Sunday morning. The fire burned down Fort Washita.

The fort has stood in Tishomingo since 1842. The building once housed soldiers assigned to protect Choctaw and Chickasaw Indians when they were moved into Oklahoma.

Officials said the fire started early Sunday morning. Crews were able to put the raging fire out.

Park Superintendent Larry Marcy estimates the damage at $2 million.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.

No injuries were reported from the blaze.
