Officer, Suspect in Oklahoma City Shooting Incident Identified

OKLAHOMA CITY -- The officer who was injured in an exchange of gunfire Saturday afternoon in Oklahoma City and the suspect who was killed in the incident have been identified.

The exchange of gunfire was prompted by a car chase that ended near N.E. 17th Street and Lindsay Avenue. The Oklahoma City police officer who took a round to his bullet-proof vest is Sgt. Michael Davis, a 15-year veteran of the police force.

The suspect who was killed has been identified as 20-year-old David Matthew Mason.

Captain Patrick Stewart, OCPD, said both Davis and Sgt. George Kennedy, who also exchanged gunfire with Mason, have been placed on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation.

According to police, an OU police officer was trying to conduct a traffic stop when the suspect then fled, which is when Oklahoma City police were called in to help. Shortly after that the suspect abandoned his car and fled on foot.

After searching the neighborhood where he fled for about an hour, Davis and Kennedy located Mason hiding in a large blue residential trash dumpster.

"They were conducting their ground search and lifted the lid on the trash receptacle and that's when the suspect popped out around and shot the officer," said Oklahoma City Police Capt. Patrick Stewart. "The officer who was shot , and a second officer, returned fire into the receptacle."

Police confirmed that the injured officer was wearing a bullet-proof vest, and the round hit him in the vest.

It is unclear why the OU officer tried pulling over the suspect in the first place. The officer who was shot is expected to fully recover.
