OKLAHOMA CITY -- A controversial nude Angelina Jolie statue was unveiled for the first time in Norman Friday.
After weeks of waiting, artistic lovers and curious on-lookers finally got their chance to see what all the fuss is about. New York City artist Daniel Edwards' latest work "Landmark for Breastfeeding" was on exhibit at the MAINSITE Contemporary Art Gallery Friday.
The statue features a nude Angelina Jolie breastfeeding two babies. The message behind the statue is geared toward the negative stigma of public breastfeeding.
"People have a problem separating nudity and sexuality, and it's just a human form, so I don't see any problem with it," Cory Allen, project coordinator.
Beth Leinau, the mother of a 2-year-old, came to the unveiling at the MAINSITE art gallery to show her support. Leinau joined other women to breast-feed their children in front of the crowd in the art gallery.
"I've even done it in grocery stores, play grounds, church. Yeah, just whenever it's needed," said Leinau.
After Friday's exhibit, the statue may end up in a public park. Some have said it's too much, but supporters said it's time to put the issue out there for all to see.
Artist Daniel Edwards is no stranger to this kind of work. He's done similar pieces with a naked Britney Spears and Hillary Clinton. On Friday, Edwards was in London unveiling a replica of the Angelina piece.
Edwards is currently building a house filled with art in Edmond called the Bragelina. He chose Oklahoma for the house and the statue because Angelina's husband, Brad Pitt, is from Shawnee.
