OKLAHOMA CITY -- Oklahoma County District Attorney David Prater says a security guard who shot and killed a suspected bank robber and injured her husband appears justified.

Prater believes Saturday's deadly incident at the MidFirst Bank on N May Avenue could have been a lot of worse if not for the quick thinking and action of a security guard on duty.

"I have seen the video of the shooting and it appears that it is a lawful shooting and that the security guard acted appropriately and lawfully," said Oklahoma County District Attorney David Prater.

Authorities said 56-year old Barbara Lewis marched into the bank with a gun. As she tried to rob the bank, she was approached by a security guard. Lewis then pointed the gun at him.

"He told her 'put down your gun, put down your gun'. He tried to get her to surrender before he even pulled the trigger on his weapon," Prater said.

The security guard struck Lewis who fled from the bank with the guard in hot pursuit. Once outside, Lewis' husband Samuel fired shots and he too was struck by the guard who returned fire. The FBI has since turned over the case to Oklahoma City police.

"Not only our homicide investigators, but our robbery investigators are looking into this, trying to tie up any loose ends and follow up on any possible leads," said Oklahoma City Police Sgt. Jennifer Wardlow.

Prater said he'll review any new information, although it's unlikely the guard will face any charges.

"It's an unfortunate situation, but again this security guard acted heroically to the chains of events he was faced with," Prater said.

Samuel Lewis is now in stable condition at a local hospital. He faces several charges including felony murder, assault and battery with a deadly weapon and bank robbery.
