NORMAN, Oklahoma -- Three people were killed and another was seriously injured early Sunday morning after a driver lost control and crashed into a tree in Norman, police said.

Stephanie Masten, 17, and Stephen Tyler, 19, were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Gaylon Phillips, 21, and Shelby Shea, 18, were both taken to the hospital where Phillips died.

Phillips, who was the driver, had recently married and was the father of a 7-week-old baby.

Sonya Shea is the mother of the only survivor and said she is trying to come to terms with what happened.

"I feel like I'm in a dream and none of it's real. It's been a really long night," Shea said.

Her daughter, Shelby has been in the hospital recovering from extensive injures she suffered from the crash and is listed in serious condition.

"She has a fractured wrist and a broken foot. They think her neck is sprained and she's had some memory problems," Shea said.

Norman Police Cpt. Kevin Foster said the crash was one of the worst he's seen.

"The car was torn in half when it hit the tree. It's in two pieces. We're lucky we have one survivor," Foster said.

Police said they believe Phillips was speeding when he lost control of the car.

Friends and family are now trying to come to terms with their loss.

"I guess he was out having a little too much fun. Just got a little careless, made a mistake," said Jimmy Witson, who was a friend of Phillips.

Based on evidence found at the scene, police said they suspect alcohol may have been involved, but they won't be able to determine that until an autopsy can be done.
