EL RENO, Oklahoma - In February, 8-year-old Vicky Galindo launched a fund raising effort for the four-legged officers of the El Reno Police Department and now she reached her goal.
The 8-year-old lost her dog in an accident and decided she wanted to help keep the local K-9 officers safe in memory of her dog.
Vicky and her mother put up donation jars all over El Reno to raise money to buy bullet-proof vests. The vests cost between $500 and $1,200 a piece.
In June, Vicky met her goal of raising $2,000, enough to buy two bullet proof vests for the two El Reno Police K-9 units.
Vicky and her mother helped outfit the dogs in their new life-saving vests.
"This is a great opportunity to see our residents step up to take care of the special animals/officers. We hope we don't have to put the vests to test but they will protect our dogs in the line of duty," said the city of El Reno spokesperson Terry Floyd.
