EDMOND, Oklahoma -- While many children are drawn more to video games, computers and television than books, many libraries are witnessing a dramatic shift back to books.

Ten-year-old Lizzy Axley is a self proclaimed book worm and library regular.

"Instead of having to go out and buy at the book store which is expensive, they have them here and you go just pick out any kind you want," Lizzy said.

While it may be spring break, many students are being guided to choose books over vacation.

"We've been very busy the last two days and it is just two days into spring break, but it's definitely a big difference compared to a year ago," said Children's Librarian Maryann Johnson.

Johnson said the latest numbers show children have checked out 2,500 more books than the same time last year.

"I think it will probably go up. I really do expect it to go up," Johnson said.

Eric Russell recently began visiting the library with son Zack. Seeing the crowds come through the doors in the Edmond library has been surprising.

"Honestly, I always thought the library was supposed to be kind of empty," Russell said. "We'd have all the space to ourselves, but that's not the case."

According to Russell, it's a good time with his son, all for free.

"We're very careful about where we spend our money, especially in regard to entertainment," Russell said.

The metro library offers book clubs, theatre groups, free internet, story time, classes, and music groups.
