Tulsa Murder Victim's Family Reacts To Charges Filed Against Accused Killer

Murder charges have been filed against a convicted rapist who Tulsa Police believe killed a woman last year.

The family of Amy Robertson, whose body was found in a dumpster in April of 2017, is speaking about the recent break in the case.

Her father says he called police frequently to see if there were any updates in the case, now, he says, he’s happy Dennis Kurtz Jr. is going to face the consequences for what he did.

“You never think one of your kids would die like that,” said John Lewis.  “She was beat worse than anything I’d ever seen.”

Lewis says he thinks about his daughter every day.  He says she used to come out of the house when he was working and wanted to help.

“She was around here every day, always wanting to do something for me,” he said.  “I’d like to hear her say, ‘Hey dad’ again, like she used to.”

Robertson’s body was found in a dumpster behind Las Americas in April of last year.  Detectives say they worked diligently to solve this case and Lewis says he never gave up hope.

“You hope every day and you look every day for some kind of an answer.  Maybe this is it,” said Lewis.

“As with any one of these cases, we try to bring peace to the family,” said Detective Jason White.

TPD Special Victim Detective Liz Eagan was investigating a separate case in which Dennis Kurtz Jr. was convicted of a rape that took place in November of 2017.  She says she noticed similarities between the two cases and worked to see if the two were connected.

“After this victim’s life was brutally extinguished, I felt that it was necessary to be diligent in developing this suspect’s patterns,” she said.

Detectives were able to link DNA evidence from the sexual assault to evidence found on Robertson’s body.

“I was in tears and I was jumping for joy, knowing that I was a part of helping solve this homicide,” said Eagan.

Robertson’s family says they are happy to finally have justice for Amy.

“She was a good worker, she loved her kids, she loved me,” said Lewis.  “She never had much, but I guess what she had was love.”
