OEA Says It's Secured 95% Of School Funding Goals

According to the Oklahoma Education Association, 95 percent of the funding they are asking for - $479 million of the requested $506 million - is secured and recurring. The OEA said teachers need $25 million to end walkout - that Tuesday's demand of $50 million was based on inaccurate numbers.

In an info graphic released Wednesday, the education group said they've secured:

$6,100 average pay increase for teachers ($354 million of $366 million requested)
$1,250 support pay ($55 million of $65 million requested)
$70 million recurring school funding ($70 million of $75 million requested)

The OEA lists the revenue sources as:

HB 1010XX $444 million in revenue from tobacco, gas, GPT
HB 1011XX $84 million revenue from itemized deductions cap
HB 1019XX $20.5 million in Amazon third-party sales tax
And for fiscal year 2020, $24 million from HB 3375 ball and dice

Following the statewide teacher walkout, educators were urged to run for state office in November. The three-day filing period began Wednesday.

Some groups, such as the Oklahoma Education Association and even some lawmakers, are calling on more people, including teachers to run for office. The OEA says this is the perfect chance for teachers to become legislators and help enact change from the inside.

The Oklahoma State Election Board says it was expecting large crowds as candidates come to their offices at the state Capitol to file for office.

According to the non-partisan group Let’s Fix This, between 2006 and 2018, 52 members of the state legislature have run unopposed at some point and seven have never had an opponent.

Currently, 28 members are in office because they did not face a challenger this term. According to data from the Oklahoma Ethics Commission, nearly three-quarters of the House remains without an opponent.

The state Election Board says candidates have until Friday afternoon to file the necessary paperwork.
