It's become something of Christmas tradition for the Salvation Army.

Each year, a generous donor - or donors - drop Krugerrands and other gold coins into the Army's iconic red kettles.

Friday, the Salvation Army cashed in seven gold coins and one mercury dime at Tulsa Gold & Silver and got nearly $6,900 in return.

Tulsa Gold and Silver also matched kettle donations up to $2,500. It's money that will be put to work right here in Tulsa.

"When they make these things possible, it allows us to be able to complete our mission and to help those who cannot help themselves," said Salvation Army Tulsa Area Command Capt. Ken Chapman

The Tulsa Salvation Army set a goal of raising $800,000, and we're told they just hit the $400,000 mark.
