The Humane Society of Tulsa spent most of Tuesday rescuing 70 dogs from a Bixby home. The animals are now at an emergency shelter, being looked at by veterinarians.

The Humane Society of Tulsa spent the day getting the animals out of a house at 119th and Mingo.

The home is not the type of place you'd expect to find 70 dogs, but the humane society says that's how many were living in crates inside the Bixby house.

Humane Society of Tulsa president Gina Gardner said, “70 animals is typically what we would have in our care, with full trained staff taking care of them.”

Gardner said the property owners were trying to run a rescue out of their home, but it got out of control. She said the couple was taking in animals, but not placing them in new homes.

Each dog had a name, and most looked to be in good health.

Gardner said while the intentions were good, the situation for the animals was not.

“Although the owners of the property were definitely trying their best to take care of them, you can't have 70 animals in a home, left in small crates all the time,” she said.

Gardner said the couple was housing dogs for rescue groups out of Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado and one that brings dogs back from Afghanistan. She said the groups turned the dogs over without doing the proper checks on the couple.

“It's unfortunate that those rescue groups didn't do their due diligence,” Gardner said.

But the humane society team will do things differently to make sure these dogs get the space and love they deserve.

This latest rescue follows quickly after the same organization took in 58 Chihuahuas last week.

Because the humane society has made several big rescues recently, Gardner says it is in critical need of support.

Cash donations can be made online at TulsaPets.com.

Donations may be dropped off at the emergency shelter located at 133rd and Memorial in Bixby. The address is 13290 South 80th East Avenue.

A news release states they badly need:

  • Stainless steel food and water bowls
  • Dog food and treats
  • New or gently used bath towels
  • Dog collars
  • Cleaning supplies including paper towels, dish and laundry soap,
  • Bleach wipes
  • Bottled water for volunteers

The Humane Society of Tulsa is located at at 6232 East 60th Street.
