Kids from across the state took part in a trap shooting program sponsored by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation. Middle and high school students competed in hopes of advancing to the state level in April.
Coordinator Damon Springer said the program teaches kids shooting skills and hopefully introduces them to a lifelong love of the outdoors.
The program started three years ago with 50 schools and has grown by another 35 schools each year, Springer said. He thinks the chance to get outdoors and shoot is even more important in today's society.
"Nowadays kids are inside more than they're outside," he said. "We want to give them the opportunity to still be introduced to firearms in a safe manner and have that opportunity to come out and shoot."
"We hope eventually, down the road, they will possibly take up and want to do some hunting."
The competition was held at the Oil Capital Rod and Gun Club in Coweta.
