A new expansion at the Broken Arrow animal shelter will ensure every dog or cat is spayed or neutered before it's adopted.

"That's the goal, to reduce the number of animals that end up in shelters across the United States," said Lanny Damf, Broken Arrow Animal Control director.

The director says the surgical space was set aside when the shelter opened in 2011, but it took four years to buy the $15,000 in needed equipment. Now animals won't have to be transported twice a week to Spay Oklahoma in Bixby.

Veterinarian Dr. Jennifer Livesay will perform the operations at the shelter twice a week. The OSU graduate is currently employed with Spay Oklahoma and will now perform the operations in Broken Arrow twice a week.
