Water Flows Over Muskogee Levee; Officials Concerned About Erosion

A neighborhood in Muskogee has flooded significantly around a detention basin as the rain fell on Wednesday. By late afternoon, it had receded some.

The area in and around The Meadows, on the south side of the city, was surrounded by water, but no homes are in danger at this time, a resident says. The water is, however, causing an issue for people trying to travel to and from their homes.

Muskogee resident Katherine Wilson said she has lived in The Meadows for 15 years, and the last time it flooded this badly was 2002.

"We had to get out, had to have the house redone, we got flood insurance, and I keep getting it," she said. "I never stopped getting flood insurance because of this chance."

News On 6 storm tracker Darren Stephens is on scene and has confirmed with authorities there is not a levee break, but water is flowing over the levee and officials are concerned it could erode and break.

A precautionary sandbagging operation took place at North Street and York, and crews also dug out a clogged pipe.

Leif Wright, with Muskogee Now, reports there is no water inside Hilldale School at this time, contrary to other reports.
