Tulsa City Council To Vote On Brady Name Change Thursday

The Tulsa City Council plans to vote Thursday evening at 6 p.m. on the possible name change for Brady Street.

The ordinance they're considering would have the street become Burlington, reflecting the original name considered in 1907.

Documents on file at City Hall indicate when the streets were first named, "Burlington" was typed on the ordinance, then crossed out, and "Brady" was handwritten over it. Council staff believes it's possible the original name is a reference to Burlington, Kansas.

The council vote will come without a new public hearing, which was held last week. The councilors will each have an opportunity to speak. Councilor Phil Lakin will be present to vote. Last week, with Lakin absent, councilors indicated they were evenly split on the issue. Rather than vote with a tie, which would defeat the ordinance, councilors continued the discussion to this week to give Lakin the opportunity to vote.

Brady Street extends through two council districts, and both of those councilors, Jack Henderson and Blake Ewing, said they intend to vote for the name change.
