Christmas Day Snow Storm Worst Along, South Of I-40

Snowfall along the I-40 corridor and south left roads slick and hazardous, across much of the state of Oklahoma Tuesday, and it may continue through the night.

News On 6 meteorologist Michael Grogan says the main low pressure system will push by just south of the Red River Tuesday afternoon, allowing for bands of snow to wrap around the northern side of the system.

That means an area south of a line from Stillwater to Tulsa to Fayetteville will see some snow with only minor accumulations expected.

But Grogan says, along and south of I-40, residents can expect moderate to heavy bands that will dump in excess of 6 inches of snow in some places.

Snowfall rates of more than an inch an hour are possible in the McAlester area and visibility may be reduced to near zero at times with strong northerly winds.

Grogan says blowing and drifting snow will add to the already treacherous driving conditions Tuesday evening.

For the rest of eastern Oklahoma, he says wind chill values will drop to near zero degrees Tuesday night and Wednesday morning as cold air wraps in behind this system.

Slick roadways across southeastern Oklahoma may last into Wednesday with these bitter cold temperatures even though the snow will taper off overnight.
