OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- An Oklahoma County jury convicts a former military police officer of first-degree murder.

The panel deliberated more than six hours before finding Carl Cleophas Jackson guilty early Saturday morning of killing a bystander in a May 2006 shootout.

The 51-year-old Jackson told Oklahoma City police he shot Donne Rynell Jeffreys in a gun battle that included as many as 30 shots near Northeast 22nd Street and Fairmont.

Jackson later recanted that statement. He testified Friday that he wasn't involved in the shootout.

Jackson could be sentenced to life in prison.
