(Springdale-AP) -- Tyson Foods Incorporated plans a major expansion at its Springdale headquarters.

The company announced the plan yesterday, when it held a ceremony to open its new five-point-two (m) million dollar food-safety laboratory.

Chairman and chief executive John Tyson says the expansion is needed because the company has outgrown the research and development facility within its current headquarters building. The new research facility will be built next to the headquarters building.

Last night, the Springdale Planning Commission approved a zoning change for 133 acres to allow for the construction.

John Tyson says the company plans ten years of improvements -- adding offices to accommodate company growth.
